RACE RESULTS
Miles for Moffitt reached an incredible milestone on Saturday, May 12, breaking $1 million raised since the inaugural race seven years ago! Thanks to the hard work and dedication of Moffitt faculty and staff, event sponsors, volunteers and members of the community, this year’s race set new records across the board.
It was truly a team effort resulting in 7,180 registered participants, 234 teams and a growing number of virtual runners. More than 480 volunteers, including many Moffitt employees, helped ensure everything was set up before sunrise, assisted with all aspects of the event and cleaned up afterwards.
“Miles for Moffitt started as a community event and the community has responded,” explains Karen Dalton, Miles for Moffitt founder and wife of Moffitt President and CEO Dr. William Dalton. “They have taken it personally because fighting cancer is personal. Each year the number of participants and teams grows, and more than half of our participants are on a corporate or family team. Miles for Moffitt would like to say a million thanks to everyone who came together to make this year a success. And to everyone at Moffitt, thank you for working so hard to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer.”
Cancer survivors gathered on stage after the races for a special tribute and recognition led by emcees and Channel 10 News anchors Heather Van Nest and Reginald Roundtree. The highlight was the presentation of the third annual Priscilla Mack Survivorship Award. This honor is presented to a cancer survivor who shows an outstanding commitment to the fight against cancer and continually inspires those who have been diagnosed.
Karen Dalton presented this year’s award to Bob Samuels who has reached thousands on a national level with his tenacious approach to cancer prevention and survival education, specifically about prostate cancer. Samuels is a former Moffitt Board member, the founding chairman of the National Prostate Cancer Coalition and the Florida Prostate Cancer Network, Inc. In 2000, he founded what we now call the Men’s Health Forum, which has educated more than 10,000 men about prostate cancer.
Moffitt’s Mole Patrol was onsite and screened 107 people in less than three hours. The team of doctors, screening assistants, educators, facilitators and volunteers identified four Basal Cell and five Squamous Cell Carcinomas and many other suspicious findings.
Title sponsor PNC Bank, along with presenting sponsor Tampa Bay Rays and survivor tribute sponsor Gerdau, along with many other generous supporters, make it possible for 100 percent of the race registration fees to directly support Moffitt’s young cancer researchers who are working tirelessly to carry out Moffitt’s lifesaving mission.
