Dear Friends of Miles for Moffitt,

Calling all runners and walkers! Make your miles count!

Join us on Saturday, May 10 for the third annual Bank of St. Petersburg Miles for Moffitt at USF. It is a 5k Race/Fitness Walk and One Mile Fun Run/Walk with a purpose!  We are racing to end cancer while raising money for cancer research programs at Moffitt with a celebration that includes fun, fitness and friends.

Whether you are a competitive runner or recreational walker; an individual or part of a team, make your miles count as we all join Moffitt in their mission, "to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer."  Your participation helps by creating awareness and giving dollars to research thus turning your miles into milestones. 100% of every race registration fee goes directly to research at Moffitt Cancer Center.

Not everyone can be there in person...some of our participants are "virtual runners" who have registered their entry fee as a donation.  Among those virtual participants, we are honored to have the team of "Operation Cancer Freedom" who are comprised of 10 of our finest in uniform participating while stationed in Iraq. We salute you!

The Celebration of Life Ceremony, honoring survivors and loved ones,  is truly the cornerstone of the annual preparations that culminate on race day.  We encourage cancer survivors, family and friends to join us in this special recognition event.  Survivors are our inspiration as we recognize their courage in the journey from diagnosis, through treatment and every other milestone on the way back to becoming cancer free.

Pete Pfannerstill plans 50 mile run for Miles for Moffitt!

Going the extra miles

Pete Pfannerstill is approaching one of those milestones in life that should not pass without proper notice.  As he approaches his 50th birthday, he will be celebrating the occasion by running 50 miles and hopes to raise $5,000 for Moffitt's cancer research in conjunction with the Miles for Moffitt 5k.

Pete's passion for running is the stuff legends are made of...he has completed over 20 ultramarathons, including three 100 mile endurance runs.  But his passion for raising money for cancer research hits close to home as he describes how his father successfully battled bladder and prostate cancer at the age of 54, allowing him to live cancer free until he was 82.  His sister, diagnosed with an inoperable form of cancer and his mother, who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 83, were both treated and cured.  However, he knows that many families are not so lucky.  Many types of cancer do not respond to treatment.  He hopes to raise those odds by raising money for more research.  In adopting Moffitt's mission as his own, Pete says, "I hope to raise cancer awareness and to contribute to the cure and prevention of cancer."

If you would like to help Pete reach his goal, send your tax deductible donation, payable to Miles for Moffitt to:

Moffitt Morning Milers Clinic

More Milestones....

More milestones are being met by the 40 participants in the Saturday running clinic held at Moffitt.

Held in cooperation with the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA and Sweetbay Supermarket, the Moffitt Morning Milers clinic meets from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturdays, March 15 to May 3, at the cafeteria at Moffitt Cancer Center.  The $30 clinic fee covers the eight-week training session, race registration and t-shirt.  Anyone who attends six out of eight sessions and completes the race will receive a three-month YMCA individual membership.

Weekly sessions include warm-up exercises, group training walks, refreshments and presentations on wellness topics designed to promote fitness and prepare participants for the event.  Topics cover nutrition, therapeutic massage, injury prevention during exercise and selection of proper footwear.  Miles for Moffitt would like to thank the YMCA, Feet First, the American Running Store, USF College of Medicine, Moffitt Cancer Center, UltraSports Massage Therapy, Sweetbay, and Myrna Haag for providing the weekly presentations and motivation.  Look for the Moffitt Morning Milers in their special t-shirts on race day!
